Revision Rhinoplasty

As a solution to complex nasal revisions, this highly specialized procedure, also known as Secondary rhinoplasty or revision rhinoplasty, is often performed to correct unsatisfactory results from previous nasal surgeries, and requires working with modified nasal structures.

Why is Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery More Difficult?

From the patient’s perspective, revision rhinoplasty is no more difficult than the initial surgery. What makes the procedure for the surgeon more difficult is the surgeon himself.

Revision rhinoplasty is a more complex, slightly more difficult procedure for the surgeon than primary rhinoplasty. Because revision rhinoplasty has differences compared to primary surgery. These differences are:

Tissue planes are often narrowed.
Cartilage and bone tissues, which are very valuable to the surgeon, were removed excessively or asymmetrically.
Negativities in the healing process caused the cartilage structure to weaken excessively and the cartilage to bend. This requires much more careful and gentle work during surgery.
Skin and soft tissues are very important in revision rhinoplasty. Often there may be scar tissue on the skin.
In revision rhinoplasty, a more intense inflammatory tissue response may be encountered compared to primary rhinoplasty.
Additionally, a large portion of the nasal septum cartilage may have been mostly used or inadequate in previous surgery.
Deformation and deficiency of normal anatomical structures make revision surgeries much more difficult than primary rhinoplasty. Because most patients have not only aesthetic problems but also functional problems.

At this point, the surgeon’s experience and patience become important. Moreover, when everything is done properly in revision rhinoplasty, the healing response of existing tissues and skin will also affect the outcome.

Suitable Candidates for Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure in which the patient is not satisfied with his new nose and has it replaced with a new one due to problems such as undesirable irregularities, collapse, deformity and breathing problems. The purpose of revision rhinoplasty surgery is to transform the anatomical structure and appearance of the nose in a natural and aesthetic way, suitable for the patient’s facial structure, and to correct the negative aspects of the nose. This procedure can be applied to all patients aged 18 and over. However, if the patient has very serious health problems, this surgical intervention can be performed up to the age of 16.

How is Revision Rhinoplasty Done?

This operation, rather than a simple procedure that takes a very short time, can be serious enough to require bone or cartilage transplantation from another part of the body in severe cases. Revision rhinoplasty operation takes 2 hours on average. You may be discharged from the hospital on the same day, but in some cases you may need to stay in the hospital overnight for observation.
